It is also the first step towards applying for a hi-res download account.

You can email a lightbox whether you are registered or not and also whether you are logged in or not. On the right-hand side of the web page is an email form; once you fill it out and submit it, the current lightbox will be emailed.  The recipient will receive a link to the current lightbox.  Any changes you make after sending will not appear in the previously emailed version.

On the upper right-hand corner of any search page, search result page or lightbox page you will see a dropdown menu.  The last item listed on this menu is an option to create a new lightbox. Once you choose this you will be prompted to enter a name. Once you click submit the new lightbox will become part of the lightbox pull down menu list.

Keyword search tips.

* Keywords. Enter your search terms as keywords or "phrases", separated by spaces, in the text box. Surround a phrase in double-quotes ("") to match multiple-word keyphrases such as "tree frog", "Easter Island", "college student" and "farm animals".

* Refining your Search. To exclude images from your results by keyword, precede a search term by a minus sign ("-") or the word "not". For example, to search for images that depict dogs but not cats, enter "dog not cat" (or equivalently, "dog -cat").

* Photo Numbers. To locate an image by photo number, simply enter the number as a keyword into the text box.

* SEARCH TIPS: The search uses boolean logic and by default all search terms are "AND", which means that a search for "red dog swimming" is translated to "red AND dog AND swimming".

The other boolean terms used in addition to AND are: OR and NOT. NOT can also be represented by a minus "-" sign. For example if you were looking for white cats, but not medical cat scans in black & White you would either do the following samples:

white AND cat NOT scan
is the same as:
white AND cat -scan

Also parentheses and quote marks are supported. Parentheses are used to group the terms as in:
white AND (cat OR dog)

which is different than:
white AND cat OR dog

The first only returns white cats and white dogs, and the second returns white cats and dogs of any color.

Quote marks are used to denote phrases such as "wild cat".

All of these can be combined.
e.g."big cat" -lion

You can also search by image number.

How to download a hi-res image file.

You must be logged in and have a download account. Download accounts are available for qualified customers.

Under the thumbnail of each image in your lightbox you will see the option to "download image". This option also appears on the "preview" page. This is the window which opens when you click on a thumbnail to view a larger version of it.

Once you click on this a short form requesting information about image usage will appear. Once you fill this out the download process will begin.
